| We were very lucky to get such a sweet and cuddly bird to start with. She has never said a word, but has several meaningful whistles. Kevin bought her for me for our first wedding anniversary. She was two years old at the time. The store we bought her at told us she was an immature sun conure, later we learned she is actually a sun conure/jendaya conure hybrid. The store was later shut down and the owner arrested for illegal bird smuggling.
Sun conures are generally regarded as loud screamy birds, and when we got Zooey, she did screech a lot. We did some behavioral training both with ourselves and her, to get her to stop screaming, and to ring a little bell to come out of her cage. Of course, we get three well spaced bell rings, then she screams if we don't keep up our side of the bargain!
Zooey was my first bird, and she has traveled all over California with me, stayed in elegant hotels and Motel 6's, a mountain resort and a motor home. She dances, whistles, and cuddles inside my shirt. She is 8 years old, and has laid three unfertile eggs. She would love to have babies I think, but we choose not to perpetuate hybridization.
Zooey is very cuddly and loves to climb into my shirt and snuggle. Sometimes she squeaks to me quietly to show her content. This can also make her hormonal and want to lay eggs. She had laid three eggs inside my shirt the second year we had her. This year, she has laid three more eggs. We are much more careful to keep her out of our shirts now, and to supplament her with lots of calcium as she almost became eggbound.
Zooey is very accepting of strangers and has her favorites. She loves my good friend Sancia and Sarah. After talking with Sancia we realized we bought our birds at the same store. Sancia has a male sun/jendaya hybrid named Cyrano bought at the same time as we bought Zooey.
