| | Proper grooming of the companion parrot is essential for safety,
health and appearance. Dangers of improper grooming or lack of grooming include
nails that are too long and catch in fabric or in toys, causing panic and
the potential for injury or death in a bird's desperate attempt to free itself,
birds whose wings are not clipped properly may fall to the ground and break it's
keel bone on impact, having no support feathers to help it flutter to the ground
safely. Blood feathers may be cut causing the bird to bleed and suffer shock to
it's system possibly leading to death. Feathers cut too short may irritate a
bird's skin and cause plucking or self-mutilation in sensitive birds. Unclipped
wings may allow a bird to escape, fly into a window or mirror and break it's
neck, fly into a toilet and drown or be poisoned, or fly into a kitchen in use
with all the cooking hazards present there.
When we groom your bird, you will see every care is taken to minimize the bird's stress and
maximize safety and hygiene. All tools are disinfected before and after each
bird, and no disposable item is ever reused. A clean, fresh towel or cloth
is used to restrain the bird while being groomed, to prevent injuries to all
concerned. High quality sharp scissors are used for wing trims.
A Dremel handheld, as well as appropriate toe nail files are used
for the beak and toenails, tailored to each bird's changing needs.
All procedures and methods used are explained in full to the owner before any
service is performed, and questions are encouraged.
Key Benefits
 | Grooming inside your home prevents exposure to strange birds and their
diseases |
 | In-Home grooming is easier for you and the bird, no traveling, no traffic,
no waiting in line |
 | Appointments available for YOUR convenience, we work weekends, evenings,
and some holidays |
 | At home, the familiar environment comforts both Parrot and Owner, reduces
stress reactions |
 | Wing-trimmed birds often exhibit less aggressive behaviors than full or
partially flighted birds. |
 | Wing-trimmed birds are much less likely to escape and fly away with your
heart broken and your investment in the wind. Escaped companion
parrots are often a meal for any passing cat, dog or hawk. |
 | In the wild, a parrot's constant search for food and entertainment wears a
beak down naturally. But birds in captivity may not chew toys enough, work
hard enough at their food and exercise enough to wear their beaks down
sufficiently. So birds often need to have beaks shortened to prevent cracks
or tips breaking off, or flakes removed to prevent bacterial growth and
fungal infections. |
Capabilities
- Wing Trimming
- We trim flight feathers in accordance with each specie's needs.
Primaries are trimmed to prevent upward flight, secondaries are never
clipped, to provide the parrot the ability to flutter down and not
fall, potentially bruising or breaking the beak and breaking the keel bone.
Each wing is examined for blood feathers prior to clipping. We can
also consult on your bird's broken blood feathers.
- Toenails and Talons
- The different parrot and bird species and all age groups need talon
grooming appropriate to their age, abilities and activity level.
Talons can be blunted, rounded, and shortened.
- Beak Grooming
- Appropriate grade nail files are used to gently
remove excess beak growth and reduce irregularities caused by lack of
chewing wear. Excessively long beak tips are filed to prevent breaking
off causing bleeding to occur. Beak notching to prevent feather plucking
is NOT performed. Considerable overgrowth can be a result of serious
medical illness and must be attended to by a veterinarian.
